In reality there is one pressure hull each side of the missiles, but the SLBMs themselves are surrounded by a ballast tank. The Typhoon submarines were built to carry 20 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, each capable of carrying 10 independently targetable, nuclear warheads. The shootout at the end of the movie takes place in a large room surrounding the ballistic missile tubes this is also a somewhat unavoidable error, since at the time the submarine's unorthodox internal arrangement of seven separate pressure hulls was not widely known. In fact, some Soviet photographs were manipulated to remove the propeller cowls. The real submarine had six torpedo tubes, and shrouded propellers with twin rudders directly behind them. The common image (as seen in many model kits and the movie) had two large exposed propellers, eight torpedo tubes and a "beavertail" rudder. The propulsion system is described in the novel as an arrangement of pumpjets. Red October herself was a model, and featured an unavoidable error: while photographs of the Typhoon had circulated in the West, nobody outside the intelligence community knew what it looked like below the waterline. Marko Alexandrovich Ramius, a Lithuanian who has risen to high levels of trust in the Soviet Navy, intends to defect to officers and the experimental nuclear submarine Red October, a Typhoon-class submarine equipped with a revolutionary stealth propulsion system. In the book it was equipped with an impeller-based tunnel drive system, but in the movie this was changed to a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) drive system, using two tunnels alongside the submarine's propellers. Red October is a fictional variant of the massive Soviet Typhoon class ballistic missile submarine, the largest ever designed. The CIWS is seen on the port (left) side of the Reuben James. Also, in the original Tom Clancy novel, Ryan uses a Browning Hi-Power. It is interesting to note that although the Colt Mancuso gives Ryan is in the classic M1916 leather holster Mancuso's is in the M12 Universal Military holster which was not available at the time the movie was set. Jack Ryan ( Alec Baldwin) as well, who uses it in a confrontation with the GRU sleeper agent Igor Loginov ( Tomas Arana). of the Red October, Captain 1st Rank Marko Ramius ( Sean Connery) to defend himself with, and issues one to Dr. CDR Mancuso later gives his Colt to the C.O. The Soviets’ newest Typhoon-class ballistic missile submarine, Red October, was equipped with a revolutionary silent propulsion system, nicknamed Caterpillar Drive. Seen first in the hands of Commander Bart Mancuso ( Scott Glenn) and Sonar Technician 2nd Class Ronald "Jonsey" Jones ( Courtney Vance). They plan to defect to the United States. While on its trial run, the captain, Marko Ramius has hijacked the submarine along with its crew. This war machine has been named the Red October. Like so many aspects of the Russian Navy submarine fleet, we are kept guessing. The Colt MK IV Series 70 pistol chambered in 9x19mm appears several times towards the end of the film. Typhoon SSBN: The REAL Red October Soviet Submarines The Soviet TYPHOON Class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) was designed in the 1970s both as a counterbalance to the US Navy’s impressive Trident missile program and as a way of making the Soviet SSBNs more survivable by hiding them under the Arctic ice-cap. Description Based on the movie of the same name, the Soviet Union have been building in secret a Typhoon-class submarine with nuclear strike capabilities. But that is not to say it couldn’t be done. If so (and it seems likely), then it could involve major renovations. Possibly some modernization work would be required if not all of the missile tubes are currently active. So whether or not Dmitry Donskoy currently carries part of Russia’s nuclear deterrent, it seems that it could if called upon. And it has been observed at a weapons pier specially designed for loading and unloading nuclear missiles. It frequently joins other Russian Navy vessels on exercises. Under this all of the tubes have to be counted even if not used.Įven if it only has one missile tube ready there is no denying that the giant submarine is still active. The difference to the Russian Ministry of Defense information may reflect their status under New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty). But there have been persistent rumors that only one or two tubes were upgraded to allow it to act as a test bed. Officially, per the Russian Ministry of Defense website ( in Russian), it has a capability for 20 of the missiles.
